The border crossings between Slovenia and Hungary serve as connection points between the two countries, facilitating cross-border traffic. Thus, the border crossing holds special significance for international trade and tourism.
Slovenia and Hungary share a border that stretches over 120 km, allowing for several border crossings that significantly ease traffic between the two countries.
The most important border crossings include:
The following section gives you an overview of whether you need a vignette in Slovenia and if there are any specific toll sections.
If you wish to use Slovenian highways and expressways during your trip, you will need an electronic vignette, called E-Vinjeta. The E-Vinjeta is required for vehicles under 3.5 tons total weight. If your vehicle exceeds this weight, the vignette requirement is waived, and the toll is based on the distance traveled. There are also special toll sections, meaning additional fees apply regardless of the weight, such as for the Karawankentunnel.
For your trip, you can choose between different vignette durations:
If your vehicle weighs over 3.5 tons total weight, instead of the vignette, you will need a DarsGo device to pay the distance-based toll. This toll is calculated based on the distance traveled, the number of axles, and the Euro emission class (level of pollution). The Euro emission class is divided into pollution classes 1-6, where class 1 represents high pollution and class 6 represents low pollution.
Although the Karawankentunnel itself is not a vignette-requiring section, it is accessed via toll-required roads. The tunnel connects Austria with Slovenia and is mainly used to cross the border. If you are traveling from Austria to Slovenia and plan to use the Karawankentunnel, please be aware of the additional fees for using this special toll section and make sure to obtain a digital vignette for the access roads to the tunnel.
The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette in Hungary and if there are any specific toll sections.
In Hungary, a vignette is required for cars, trailers, and motorhomes. It is called the e-Matrica (Hungarian vignette), which is electronically checked via the vehicle's license plate. You should purchase the e-vignette online before your trip, as fines are imposed for not having the e-vignette while driving on a toll road.
Depending on the vehicle class, the toll may vary. For example, cars with more than 7 seats are charged higher than cars with fewer than 7 seats. More information about the various vehicle classes can be found here:
Within the different vehicle classes, you can choose between different durations. If you're unsure about your vehicle class, you can find more detailed information here.
If your vehicle exceeds 3.5 tons total weight, you are required to pay a distance-based toll. This includes motorhomes, buses, and trucks, which since January 2024, must pay an electronically calculated distance-based toll via the HU-GO system. This replaces the vignette, so it is no longer required for these vehicles.
