The special toll refers to special toll routes. These special routes are often tunnels or mountain passes that involve higher construction and maintenance costs. The construction of tunnels presents major technical challenges and requires specialized machinery and technologies, which result in high costs.
To use special toll routes, an additional fee must be paid. Although these routes are exempt from the vignette requirement and the distance-based toll, they are still subject to toll charges. This means that even if you have already purchased a vignette or paid the distance-based toll (also known as usage-based toll), you must pay an extra fee for certain tunnels and mountain passes. Therefore, every vehicle owner must pay the special toll when using a special toll route. Note that most special toll routes can only be accessed via vignette-required roads or distance-based toll roads. For this reason, it always makes sense to purchase a vignette or an electronic on-board unit (for the collection of the distance-based toll), regardless of the special toll route.
In Slovenia, there is only one special toll route for which you must pay additional fees. This special toll route is the Karawanks Tunnel A11 (operated by ASFINAG and DARS), which connects Austria and Slovenia. The price for using the Karawanks Tunnel varies depending on the vehicle class. Fees can be paid on site in cash or by credit card. You can also purchase digital route toll tickets from ADAC sales points. With a digital route toll ticket, you can use the green-marked toll lanes, eliminating the need for payment on site.
