Ljubljana is one of the smallest European capitals, yet it attracts countless tourists every year. The city has much to offer its visitors! Not only does its centuries-old history impress visitors, but also its beautiful architectural buildings, such as Ljubljana Castle, the landmark of Slovenia's capital.
This main attraction of Ljubljana has more to offer than it seems at first glance. In addition to a viewing tower that offers a wonderful view of the city, the castle houses a museum exhibition on Slovenian history. Other features of the castle include the Puppet Museum, St. George's Chapel, the prison, and the "Virtual Castle" activity. Take the funicular to reach this unique castle. The funicular itself offers an impressive view of the city.
Once you arrive, be sure to try the fun adventure “Escape from the Castle” in the form of an Escape Castle! The Escape Castle gives you the chance to learn more about the city's history in a particularly fun way. The dragon also plays an important role in this activity, a motif you will encounter again in Ljubljana!
In addition to this escape game, the Puppet Museum at the castle offers a special attraction for history enthusiasts. Ljubljana has a rich puppetry tradition and will enchant you with the creativity of contemporary Slovenian puppeteers. If this exhibition is not enough for you, feel free to visit the larger museum exhibition.
Would you prefer to learn about the history of the castle in an interactive way? Then you should check out the "Time Machine" experience tour. Since its introduction, the tour has become one of the castle's most popular offerings and is unlike a “normal” museum tour. You will get to know the history of the castle as the guide takes you to six different time stations. At each station, you will encounter a character from that particular era who will give you a fascinating insight into that period.
In addition to these various activities at the castle, you can also visit the castle café and enjoy a nice cup of coffee. There is also a nightclub, a wine bar, and two restaurants in the castle that will delight you. Especially in summer, the castle could not seem more magical. During this time, open-air movie screenings called “Movies Under the Stars” take place.
The dragons, which are also part of the “Escape from the Castle” activity, can also be seen on Dragon Bridge. The famous dragon statues adorn the bridge, giving it the name “Dragon Bridge.” It is considered a key feature of Ljubljana, so don’t miss the chance to take a photo with these magnificent dragons! The four dragon statues appear both a little intimidating and almost lifelike (at least if you believe in dragons). Let yourself be enchanted by this masterpiece and indulge in the childlike hope that dragons are part of the earthly world.
Would you like to get a better taste of Slovenian cuisine? Then you should visit the central market! The market is divided into the Vodnikov and Pogačar Square market stalls, the market hall between these two squares, and the market hall along the Ljubljanica River.
From mid-March to the end of October, the famous food market “Open Kitchen” takes place every Friday. Be fascinated by the outstanding skills of Slovenian chefs, who prepare dishes from Slovenian cuisine as well as from around the world. However, note that this event only takes place in good weather!
The Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik built the market complex between 1940 and 1944, and its beauty can still be seen today along the Ljubljanica River. Here you will find shops selling Slovenian products, restaurants, a fish market, and the DobraVaga art gallery. If these parts of the market are not interesting enough for you, even more is offered! On the ground floor, you can try dried meat products, homemade bread from a stone oven, homemade cookies and pastries, various kinds of homemade cheese, and much more.
Are you passionate about Ljubljana's architecture? Then you should take a closer look at the house of architect Jože Plečnik. In addition to the market hall along the Ljubljanica River, he also shaped many other places in Ljubljana with his art. Discover plans, models, and photos of his works, such as the National and University Library or St. Michael's Church in the Ljubljana Marshes (both of which you should definitely visit). Additionally, in his house, you will find unrealized versions of his art, such as the "Cathedral of Freedom," which was meant to be a parliamentary building.
Our little tip is the LUV Fest, the Festival of Love, Art, and Hiking, which takes place from February 8 to March 12 each year! The festival is dedicated to the Slovenian poet France Prešeren. The art installations aim to unite young and old and create lasting memories through countless photo spots. You can also let your creativity run wild at various workshops and create your own products. In addition, concerts and exhibitions take place. Of course, culinary delights are also not forgotten!
Ljubljana has so much more to offer than just a classic city tour followed by shopping! Take advantage of the various activities to experience something special. Discover the history of Slovenia at an interesting location and try Slovenian cuisine. Ljubljana is definitely worth a longer visit!
