Would you like to spend a holiday by the sea? Then the coastal town of Piran in Slovenia is definitely worth considering! It is often referred to as the most beautiful town in Slovenia.
Piran is an ancient coastal town and is considered a cultural and historical monument. The medieval city walls surround the Mediterranean town, and narrow alleys with closely packed houses complete the picturesque setting. Piran is regarded as one of the most photogenic towns along the Adriatic coast, which stretches from Italy to Albania. Piran has a lot to offer, including beautiful architecture, the Maritime Museum, and the Aquarium, as well as events such as the Salt Festival and the Tartini Festival. But what’s the story behind the name "The City of Salt"? Piran is known for its traditional method of salt production through the salt pans, which paved the way for the development of this picturesque town.
You can still admire the salt pans today! The Sečovlje Salina Nature Park is located near Piran on the Slovenian coast, close to the Croatian border. In the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, the traditions of salt production are still practiced today. You can take guided tours to learn more about the artisanal salt production process. Additionally, you can enjoy the diversity of flora and fauna, particularly observing migratory birds. Up to 296 different bird species have been counted so far. But why are there so many birds in this nature park? The salt pans serve as a natural habitat for migratory birds, as the wetlands provide an ideal resting and wintering place. Due to the artisanal (non-mechanical) salt production and the good management of the salt pans, the salt ecosystems have been preserved. Furthermore, the seawater brings abundant food, which is available for various bird species in the shallow areas of the unused salt pans. But the salt pans are not only important during the winter! Due to the good habitat for birds, the nature park also serves as a breeding ground for many birds in spring. If you're particularly interested in the fauna related to the salt pans, be sure to visit the nature park and don't forget to bring binoculars! The hiking trails are particularly suitable for observing the bird diversity, offering impressive views of the picturesque nature. Since 1993, the nature park has been recognized as an important international wetland, and in 2001, it was declared a national monument by the Slovenian government. To enter the park, you must pay an entrance fee, which supports conservation efforts.
