For a wonderful three weeks, I drove to Slovenia. And I must say: The small gem of Europe truly captivated me. Mountains, sea, lakes, vineyards, and picturesque towns: What a beautiful and diverse country! In the following section, I'll share my road trip and tell you what you definitely shouldn't miss in Slovenia!
I set off directly from Germany to Slovenia by car. Beforehand, I packed everything I needed for the trip: the usual vacation essentials and some camping equipment. Now and then, I wanted to set up my tent in nature. Once everything was packed in the car, I was ready to go!
My journey initially took me through Austria and then through the Karawanken Tunnel, on the other side of which Slovenia, the small country on the edge of the Alps, awaited me. Fortunately, I left home early because it took me about eight hours from southern Germany. Depending on where you start, it might be worth considering an overnight stop halfway through the trip.
Also very important: Don’t forget the toll stickers! They are required in both Austria and Slovenia – even if you are just passing through. On my trip, I exited the highway in both countries to purchase the stickers at a rest area. Nowadays, however, I recommend buying the toll stickers digitally in advance – it’s much more convenient and saves you precious time on the already long drive.
After that, you don’t have to worry about anything else and can tour around Slovenia at will. Easy! Oh, and while we’re on the topic: There’s also a small special toll for the Karawanken Tunnel, which connects Austria with Slovenia. So, ideally, have some cash ready!
From the national border, it took about another hour until I arrived at my first stop: Ljubljana, the beautiful capital city of Slovenia. Now, I just had to find a parking spot, and then the last challenge of the first travel day was conquered. And lo and behold, I actually found a free spot close to the large marketplace, right next to the old town. From there, my accommodation was also not far away.
