After Ljubljana, my road trip continued to Lake Bled. It takes about an hour to drive from the capital to this picturesque destination. The visit is definitely worth it: The lake at the edge of the Alpine foothills looks even more beautiful in reality than in the many pictures circulating on the internet. It’s no surprise that, besides me, countless other tourists are here to stroll around the lake, swim in it, or visit the small island in the middle by canoe.
Therefore, I recommend visiting Bled as early in the day as possible to cleverly avoid the tourist crowds. Another tip: Be sure to take a short hike to one of the many higher vantage points around the lake. Although it’s a fairly steep climb for about 30 minutes, you’ll be rewarded with an incredibly beautiful view!
Personally, despite all its beauty, Lake Bled felt a bit too touristy for me, so I made my way to my second accommodation in the early afternoon: A holiday apartment on a small farm nestled in the mountains. I settled in here for two days and simply enjoyed the expansive views and the many mountains.
Next, I headed to Lake Bohinj, which is only a 30-minute drive from Bled. Upon arrival, I first looked for a place to sleep and found a lovely campsite right by the turquoise water. Here, I pitched my tent for a few days to enjoy the peace and nature: You can go swimming, rent kayaks or canoes, walk in the forest, and hike in the mountains. Perfect for all outdoor enthusiasts!
My highlight in the region was the hike to Jezero Lake, which lies a bit higher in the mountains. But be careful: The trail is quite challenging, as you have to do some climbing and navigate close to the slope from rung to rung. A minimum level of comfort with heights is required. However, if you prefer to stay lower, there are also great destinations in the valley: The beautiful Savica Waterfall, for example, is easily accessible with a short walk and is highly worth seeing!
After the beautiful lakes, the journey continued to the Karst region. I stayed there for a few days to visit the famous Predjama Castle and the Postojna Caves.
Predjama Castle, spectacularly embedded in a massive rock wall, fascinated me with its history and architecture. While exploring the dark corridors and secret rooms, I could vividly imagine, thanks to the audio guide in my ear, what the atmosphere in the imposing fortress must have been like. A truly exciting visit!
Even more exciting – or let’s say mystical – was the visit to the Postojna Caves. The huge and labyrinthine network of stalactites and stalagmites can be visited by a small train and on foot – always with a tour guide, of course. Anyone in the area should not miss this experience: The beautiful underground world offers incredible sights, and you learn a lot about the caves and the formation of the fascinating scenery during the tour.
But even beyond these two popular sightseeing spots, the Karst region southwest of the capital is worth a short stay: The region is wonderfully quiet and expansive. So, I couldn’t resist spending a few days in a sweet little cabin in the middle of a wide meadow, just relaxing.
